Couldn't agree more!! I've also read someplace, that for the little kids their physical development improves the development of the brain. It sound logical, since more physical activity rushes the blood through the body, improves internal organs and gets more oxygen to the brain... which couldn't be a bad thing!

From a developmental point of view, sports are also very good for children, especially young children. Sports offer a huge amount of stimulation in the three basic perception areas: proprioceptive (feeling your own body), vestibular (sense of balance) and tactile (sensing qualities like temperature and texture).

Often, these stimuli are quite strong in sports, for example you feel your body really well when you run and jump. This lot of stimulation helps kids to learn about their body and how to use it, and to develop a good balance.

This is even more important if you consider that many higher skills like reading or concentration are based on proper integration of these three basic perceptions. If something goes wrong in early childhood, many of these kids face difficulties in school.

So, getting your kids into a sports team at a young age will certainly help his development. And in a team, sports are simply more fun than doing it alone.
