Lin, what a great idea to blow in a face and start learning to hold breath in a shower or even in a pool! I've never thought making them prepared like this. Since you already have an experience with teaching babies to swim, I'd like to ask you a question too: my two years old is pretty good at swimming underwater, he can swim underwater for 15 seconds, turn around, reach the target and he is enjoying it a great deal... but he still can't figure out how to bring himself to the surface to get extra breath. Somehow, I don't remember that issue with my first one - I was helping him to reach up for a breath first, and then he figured out hot to do it by himself fairly quickly. I help my second one and then let him dive back to swim further. He will swim the width of our local pool like that, but he just can't figure out how to come up for air on his own. Should I just get more patient and wait until he'll figure this out, or is there another technique that might help him? I'd really appreciate your input.

Having taught both of my babies (who are now 34 and 28 yrs of age), I feel that I have some experience in this field. A child of any age can be taught to go underwater (just a dip at first) by blowing in his face ( you will see him take a breath) and dipping him under the water. Keep looking at his face. Hug him after, whether he seems pleased or not.
He will soon learn that he will always come back up (you will bring him up at first, when he is physically able, he will rise to the surface alone. My children loved/love the water and are teaching their children to do the same. I was extremely afraid of the water as a child, and wish I had been taught to swim early. Thanks for this site.

That's an interesting question. I guess it depends on circumstances...

HI there! Just came across your blog, I have a 4.5 month old. Any tips for when I take him swimming, I haven't put his head under water or let go of him yet. We go and he lies on his back (me holding him) and tummy on a kickboard, and he kicks. He loves the water. I'm not sure if I should put his head under yet!
Thanks!
