  7. Treasure Hunts:
    1. I printed out Introductory Words, took the first five, we read them together and applied them all over the house: “Television” went onto the TV, “door” – on the door, etc.
    2. The next day, when the baby was sleeping I took all the words down and pretended some naughty magical dwarf messed it all up. My kid had a blast hanging it all back. I repeated this reshuffling of the words for a few days.
    3. I placed the pictures on the wrong objects – “table” on the window, “window” on the TV. To my surprise, my son discovered that the names are all wrong and had a blast changing them back.
    4. After a few days of similar naughty dwarf reshuffling of the words, I printed out the Treasure Hunt Notes. I picked the first five notes (the ones that mention objects that we already learned), wrapped them and hid in various places: “Search in the refrigerator”, “What’s on top of the TV?”, “Look behind the aquarium”, etc. The first note went into the envelope addressed to my son, and to the pile of new mail. Once my son woke up from his nap, we “found” the first letter from the magic dwarf and he began searching for the other ones. Reading, following directions from the letters, he found the ultimate prise – a new toy, that I couldn’t wait to give to him; an old toy, that he hasn’t seen for a little while and a new book that I’d love to read with him.
    5. Since then we have such treasure hunts all the time. The new words go up, the old ones are hidden in my file cabinets. The dwarf messes up the words, then sends letters with directions to the surprise. The surprises included new books, CD’s that I made for him myself, old toys, new toys, old toys that his niece and nephew passed down to him. So far – it works great! It really spices up our reading exercises, adds more fun into them!

Interestingly enough, it is not as difficult to teach the kids to read, as it is to preserve the language for years to come. Sometime around schoolyears, most of the native Russian speaker’s kids completely abandon any attempts to speak Russian and switch completely to English. What can you do to preserve the language?

Hi. I came across this website when I was searching the Internet for information on Zayzsev’s Cubes. Your site is the only resource for teaching young children to read by Domen’s Method in Russian I could find on Internet. I’m very upset at myself that did not learn about Domen’s Method earlier . I have been showing word flash cards to my twenty six month old daughter for about three weeks now. We’re still working on figuring the pattern of presenting the cards that would work best for us. My daughter is very active, and it’s not easy to get her attention fifteen times a day, she doesn’t seem too interested in the cards so far. We have reduced the number of daily cards from twenty five to fifteen, and show them as one set three times a day. It seems working much better, so we might add another set of math or/and another language later. I’d like to look into RightStart Mathematics introduced to me by this site as well. I’m planning on teaching her Russian, Ukrainian, English, and Spanish. We all (my husband, our older daughter, and I) speak Russian and English, I speak Ukrainian, and no one can speak Spanish yet, and we are planning to learn it together. We’ll see how it goes. Since we started with Russian, which is our priority, I have a question for Alenka or anyone who has experience teaching this language. In English the couplets, phrases and simple sentences can easily be made by simply combining individual words together. Due to grammar rules very often this would not be possible in Russian. Should I introduce the masculine form of adjectives and infinitive form of nouns now, but use their appropriate forms in the couplets, phrases and sentences later? How are you dealing with this, since so many different forms are possible? Do your children get confused by them? Do you have any suggestions for how to save time and ink on printing. Power point presentations is not an option for us since the computer is too addictive for our daughter. Thanks in advance for your response.
P.S. I’m sooooo glad I found this site. Special thanks to Alenka who created, and keeps it alive. I’m amazed what a devoted mother and generous person she is.
