Doman, Glenn and Janet, How to Teach Your Baby to Read, Gentle Revolution Press, October 2002

TeachYourBabyToRead yahoo group files, special thanks to Laurie Tiemens:

This is the book to start with. It is a fabulous introduction to the why’s and wherefore’s as well as exactly how to implement a reading program for your child. Just remember that he is describing a maximum program. And that it is only a guideline - not rules to follow.

Glenn Doman, How to Teach Your Baby To Read: A special word from the authors regarding third edition

Quote From the 3rd edition of the Book*:

Where did you get the materials?

Actually, I should rather call it a team effort. Even though I am greatly inspired by the amazing materials other moms and dads are creating and sharing with others, I should definitely list the most prominent sources:

First, a wonderful yahoo groups “TeachYourBabyToRead” and “PositiveDiscipline” that have tremendous amount of information and advice that I am hoping to make available for everyone through this website.

Second, one of the moms created a terrific site dedicated to materials in English, Spanish, Arabic and other languages: http://www.theclassicalmommy.com

How many times a day is it realistic to show the sets of Flashcards

That depends on you: as much as you both enjoy it. I also would love to find out how many times other mommies manage to do it, so if you have a minute, feel free to share it at our forum : it is very encouraging to everyone! One thing is certain: no matter how many times per day you do it, your baby will benefit from it.

I’ve got to admit, I can’t do it more often then three times a day… Based on the wonderful recommendations Laurie Tiemens in her How Do I Start Showing Flashcards post, I do three rounds daily, at least 30 minutes apart: usually twice in the morning, and once after the nap.

How do I start Showing Flash Cards?

love the explanation Laurie Tiemens, the great moderator of the TeachYourBabyToRead group posted on June 12, 2007:

“First off, let me recommend to you to do one set only the first week. That means showing one set of words three times a day. Get the feel of that and see how it fits in your life. Then add a second set if you feel you can handle it, get used to that, and see if you can handle another and so forth. Do that until you get to the point where you don’t think you can add any more sets without being stressed. Obviously, the more sets you can do the better it is for your child but only if it is done consistently and joyfully. Even one set done well can benefit your child immensely. I only did one or two sets (changing with my circumstances at the time) and my 4yo is reading beautifully.

Why teach children to read?

For me it all started with disbelief: WHY TEACH INFANTS TO READ? Then there an article about various teaching methods, mentioning Glenn Doman’s “Teach Your Baby To Read”. This article claimed that the method relied purely on visual stimulation, dry and boring, that was too limited for a good “all around” development. Now I realize that the author of the article has never read any of the Doman’s books – things mentioned in the article had nothing to do with his method. Back then I decided to search for a better method of teaching my baby, or relying to old fashioned alphabet methods: I learned to read letter by letter, everybody I know learned to read letter by letter, so why bother with some strange flash cards? But! But I requested the book from the library anyway.

Teach your baby to Read: Glenn Doman’s Method

Al right, let’s assume (or pretend if you wish) you’ve read Glenn Doman & Janet Doman, How To Teach Your Baby to Read (from now on shortened as GD) and reviewed our Summary of the book’s guidelines. Or may be you enjoyed Laurie Tiemen’s really brief summary at eHow: How to Teach Your Baby to Read (Doman’s method in a nutshell). Since you are reading this article, you are highly motivated, eager to start, though a little confused and lacking resources. That’s where I hope to help you.

How to Teach Your Child To Read

It seems that there are as many ways to teach a child to read, as there are children: some learn by phonics, some by whole words; some have special books, some have special letter magnets, some have syllable blocks, some have flash cards; some do it with their parents, some learn in school, some might even learn all by themselves! So, which method to chose? Which one is the best?

I think it depends on a child, I think it depends on a parent. I’ve heard opposing views for every single method. So, select the one that appeals to you and your child the most:

You can read my personal reasons for selecting a particular reading method or see comments below for other paren’ts experiences, and please share your own!

How to make Power Point Presentations

For many kids (and their parents!) computer based “flash cards” work the best. The easiest way to show them is using Power Point Presentation. This program allows to setup sideshow, adjust timings between the slides, easily add sound effects, etc. You can dowload existing presentations and see our recomendations on how to use them , or create your own ones. So, here are a few tips for those who are new to this process.

  1. Use file templates:
