Glenn Doman’s method of teaching a baby to read: in brief

Glenn Doman, the director of the Human Institute of Achievement of Human Potential, firmly believes that learning to read is the same skill as learning to talk and and to walk. Moreover, the years of study led him to the conclusion, that reading is not only what separates us from animals, but it also every human’s birthright. Therefore an opportunity for it should be offered as early as possible: if you can start right after birth, by all means do, but if your child is already older – don’t delay it any longer!

Glenn Doman’s Method FAQ

One personal view on teaching to read methods

I am a total book worm: I could spend an eternity curled up on a sofa with a good book. I start my introductions with a question on what books my new friend likes to read. But it wasn’t always this way… As a child I learned to read with the “traditional alphabet” method. At three I already could put letters together to read whole words. It was a torture! By the time I’ll finish my “math operations” on letters (i.e. addition of every one of them), I’d forget the beginning of the word. At five I finally could use the same “alphabetic math” for the whole sentences. I still hated reading: my wonderful memory, that usually made my parents very happy, was failing me in every single passage – I would constantly forget the beginning of every sentence, by the time I struggled to the end of it. I am sure many of you can relate. Recently I saw my five year old niece fighting every single book, every single story, every single word… My niece knew an entire alphabet at twelve months and at five reading still translated for her into the painful stuttering and same memory loss, as I had myself as a child. So for my own child I decided to forgo the alphabet and to try “whole word” method offered by Glenn Doman in his How to Teach Your Baby To Read. I hope that this will help him to start his reading experience with enjoying the actual reading process, rather then hating every second he spent… Please share your own experiences below.

Creating Word Cards

I took an easy approach. I created all the words on the coputer (download the files ) and printed out all the words on 8×14 paper, folded in half and scotch taped together the words that were too big to fit on one page. My initial set turned out waaay smaller then the size that Doman recommends. So, fell free to read more on standard card method. The good thing about my “easy” method is that… it was fast, easy, cheap and ready to use. Plus they were easier to carry around, then the gigantic posters that the book suggests and I tend drag the cards with us most of the time (I love showing them in the car – my usually very busy and very active baby is finally sitting still, welcoming the change of dull inside of the car scenery). On the other hand, such “cards” were easily damaged and I would like to repeat again for those who believe that “size matters” – letters are smaller.

TeachYourBabyToRead yahoo group files, special thanks to Laurie Tiemens:

This is the book to start with. It is a fabulous introduction to the why’s and wherefore’s as well as exactly how to implement a reading program for your child. Just remember that he is describing a maximum program. And that it is only a guideline – not rules to follow.

How many times a day is it realistic to show the sets of Flashcards

That depends on you: as much as you both enjoy it. I also would love to find out how many times other mommies manage to do it, so if you have a minute, feel free to share it at our forum : it is very encouraging to everyone! One thing is certain: no matter how many times per day you do it, your baby will benefit from it.
