How to Create My Own Books

I've created Power Point Presentations, showed them on the computer for some time and then printed out (see our ready-made materials ). You can read all about it here: How to Use Power Point Presentations.

And here is a different take - special thanks to Laurie Tiemens, the moderator of TeachYourBabyToRead group, for sharing this:

"The idea of making books may be daunting but it really isn't hard.
To make from scratch start with posterboard. 11"x14" is a good size. Punch two hole on the short side. The easiest way I've found of binding them is to put two book rings on. Others have used yarn or cable ties. Another possibility is to buy re-usable blank books (Green Thumb for Growing Brains). Then you have to spend very little time creating books.
The most cost effective way to make them is to write on one side of the page and if you have a corresponding picture put it on the back of that same page. Then when you read the book to your child, hold the book so that all he sees is the page with the words on it. When you are ready to look at the picture, flip the whole book over so that all you see is the picture. Remember, pictures are not necessary. And actually the fewer the pictures the more focus there is on the words. On the other hand, if your child needs the pictures to keep his interest up then by all means use them. Just don't let your child see them in the same layout as the words.
What you write will depend on the interests of your child and how advanced he is in the program. At first, you will want to start with one 3-4 word sentence per page. Use as large print as you can. Go ahead and use proper capitalization and punctuation. Your child will catch on to that with simple exposure.
One subject that nearly all children love is stories about themselves! Take pictures of your child doing all kinds of things and use them to write books. Tommy Goes Swimming, Tommy Eats Breakfast, Tommy Loves to Play, Tommy's Family, etc. "

I did the books on the square bit cards, made the letters nice and big 3-hole punched them and tied them up with yarn. So for example, some of the earliest books were things like:

      Sima’s Breakfast
      scrambled eggs
      (picture of scrambled eggs)
      Orange juice
(picture of a glass of orange juice)
      bowl of cereal
(picture of a bowl of cereal)
      Delicious!

That is just one example, we had them for going on a walk, her gymnastics class, her family…pretty much anything that was about her and interest her. And as I said, each of the words in the above story was also made into a word card for the baby, and dd would sometimes listen in. As she got into it more, I made the stories more complex and also not always about her. LOL

I wanted to send a thank you note to the person who recommended making books with photo albums from the dollar store and couldn’t find out who it was. I went to our local second hand store and bought two photo albums and it made making books really easy, and they’re sturdy enough for my baby which is always a plus. A lot of people donate their old photo albums because they want to switch to acid-free things for their photos, but I think for a book with magazine clippings, etc, they work great, and it’s nice to recycle too. Anyway, I just wanted
to share in my excitement, and thanks again!
