Books
For the youngest:
- Julie Appel’s touch books, like this one: Touch the Art: Brush Mona Lisa’s Hair: every painting has something “touchable”: strands of hair on Mona Lisa, rubber band on Botticelli’s Venus, sticky mustard on Roy Lichtenshtein’s “Mustard on White”. There are four of these books and we love every single one, even though they are board books. Just click on Julie Appel’s name at amazon to see the other books.
- Collection of board books for specific paineters: Mini Masters: In the Garden with Van Gogh, Quiet Time with Cassatt, Sharing with Renoir, Painting with Pciasso, and others: board books with rhymes and paintings.
- Baby Einstein: Windows to Color: fantastic board book that shows a painting for each color, shapes, see through parts, and everyday objects with that color.
- Baby Einstein: Van Gogh’s World of Color : another board book with Van Gogh paintings.
For the everyone:
- Masterpieces Up Close: Western Painting from the 14th to 20th Centuries: these books have really huge reproductions of famous paintings and little pictures of the details. These books allow to actually play with art – get to know it in a more interactive way, and to get kid’s attentions to some fine details of the artworks. At the end of the book flip/flaps show where those details can be located on the paintings and lists some information about the artist. There are another two wonderful books in this series: Louvre Up Close, Art Up Close: From Ancient to Modern
- Katie Meets The Impressionists by James Mayhew: this series is about a girl who gets lost in the museum… ON the paintings of great artists. Katie jumps from painting to painting, playing there, enjoying fun adventures… while the little ones get to learn about some masterpieces in a fun way. There are many books in this series:
Katie’s Sunday Afternoon
Katie’s Picture Show
Katie and the Sunflowers
Katie and the Mona Lisa
etc. - Regular calendars! Very inexpensive, large, colorful, they have a little information about each painting.
Web Sites
- Matisse for Kids: really cool site that introduces Matisse paintings to kids in a familiar and fun way. His own dog “guides” the kids through the site while they learn on his preference for vivid colors, bold patterns, exciting subjects. Some artistic games allow kids to create their own “Matisse-like” masterpieces. My son is totally in love with it.
Toys
I do bingo games with artworks – that is a fun way to learn them.
- 16 Art Stickers (Fine Art Stickers): these are stickers with artworks. I find them very inexpensive. My son loves small cards, so I got him many of those. We stick them on cardstock paper and cut out for games.
- Bird Cage Press: This site contains incredible collection of books and games that teach about art. Some seem a little expensive, but otherwise look terrific.
